PAIN & SPORT PERFORMANCE A 3-part series on the role of pain in sport, examining the underlying science and its function in injury and performance. It describes the biopsychosocial dimensions of pain, and the varying ways in which these factors may unfold in sport through case study review.

Part 2 – THE SCIENCE OF PAIN Pain is a complex biopsychosocial phenomenon, involving the nervous and immune systems and triggering the fight or flight response. The underlying biology that drives the experience is presented as well as the neuropsychological response to pain, including the distinction between pain and injury, and decision making as to what to do next. The complex nature of the pain experience described here in detail provides the basis for understanding the remarkable feat of pain tolerance presented in PAIN & SPORT PERFORMANCE - PART 3.
